WORLD FOOD Day celebrations promise to be of a very high caliber this year.

This was disclosed after a meeting of the World Food Day committee at the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries.

According to a spokesman World Food Day was initiated by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), and activities this year will be centred around the theme Harvesting Nature's Diversity.

In addition, the spokesman said that a week of activities had been planned from Sunday, October 10, to Saturday, October 16.

Events scheduled will include a church service on October 10; tree planting ceremonies on October 11, a two-day seminar on food and nutrition at the Wildey Conference Centre on October 12, and a tour of National Hatcheries and Monteray Farms on Thursday, October 14.

The official also revealed that a special feature of the celebrations will be an awards ceremony on October 16, sponsored by the Barbados Agricultural Society (BAS), where individuals performing meritorious service in agriculture will be given special recognition.

A number of other special events are also being organised to highlight the importance of World Food Day.

The official said efforts would be made to inform and educate children about the benefits of agriculture to the nation.

Messages to mark the event will be delivered by Minister of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries, David Bowen, and by the director general of the FAO during the week of activities.
