MUSIC, FOOD and the gathering of people from all walks of life, marked the finale to World Food Day celebrations at the Grotto on Saturday.

Haynesley Benn, General Manager of the Barbados Agricluture Society (BAS) explained the annual exhibition was organised to, "Bring the people in to see agriculture in action".

Mouth-watering aromas beckoned patrons who lined up eager to sample the delights at the barbecue tables and buffets prepared by the Hospitality Division of the Barbados Community College.

Bajans showed their love for meat when a crowd gathered to sample the barbecued pork being offered at the booth set up by the Barbados Pig Farmer's Co-operative Society Limited. Pork, according to Charles Trotman is white meat, not red and it is high in protein.

Livestock such as rabbits, bulls, sheep, and chickens brought back memories of the glory days in Queen's Park, where World Food Day celebrations previously took place. The last one there was in 1972.

Barbados and the exhibition played host to Jamaica's National Farm Queen 1993 Claudene Bryan. The 22-year-old is a lover of agriculture who runs her own small farm. The Farm Queen programme is part of the youth in Agriculture programme going on in Jamaica.

"In Jamaica, youth in agriculture has eradicated the stigma attached to agriculture" said Bryan. The programme is introduced from the primary school level. She advised that it would be effective in Barbados as such programmes would ensure a bright future for the region.
