IF HAYNESLEY BENN gets his way, the agricultural exhibitions of old could be
back.
Benn, the general manager of the Barbados Agricultural Society (BAS), thinks
there is a dire need for a festival that emphasises the contribution of
agriculture to the local economy.
"We are hoping to gradually build it back to the level of 1972 (date of the
last exhibition)," he said.
Benn further noted the need to get commercial banks and other lending
institutions involved. He added that if present attendance and interest at World
Food Day celebrations were anything to go by, a future exhibition would
definitely see a higher level of success.
The BAS official was one of the speakers at the finale on Saturday of the World
Food Day celebrations at The Grotto, Beckles Road.
Minister of Agriculture David Bowen emphasised the need for close attention to
agriculture. "This action is vital if we are to ensure the availability of
sufficient food to maintain a good standard of nutrition for the entire
community," he said.
Mouth-watering smells beckoned patrons to sample the delights at the buffet and
barbecue tables, prepared by students of the Division of Hospitality Studies.
Patrons were also able to buy fresh vegetables and livestock, such as
rabbits, bulls, sheep, and chickens.
