STOP and let's talk.

That is the call from the Barbados National Trust to Government over reports
in yesterday's NATION newspaper that the "preferred" site for the landfill is
in the Scotland District.

"If that is so, we have a conflict which must be resolved before the project
goes ahead," Director of Environment Janice Cumberbatch told the WEEKEND
NATION.

She said it has implications for the further development of the Trust Heritage
sites, one of which is at Morgan Lewis from where the "preferred" Greenland
site would be visible.

However, Cumberbatch made it clear that the Trust does not support the NIMBY
syndrome (Not In My Back Yard).

"We all dispose waste and we have to take responsibility and find a rationale
solution," she said, adding that she hoped that Government would explore all
options "to the fullest" before settling on the "lowest monetary cost option."

Acknowledging the difficulties of locating a landfill, such as population
proximity and water zoning, Cumberbatch said that if Government is persuaded
that the dump must be located at Greenland then it must start dialogue with
the Trust and the 600 residents in the area.

"We would need to know how to plan our (Heritage Tourism) expansion," she
said, adding that they must be assured that proper management systems will go
into place to avert another Mount Stinkeroo.
