CONCERNED about the continuing deforested state of the island, the National Conservation Commission is starting a National Arbor Day.
September 22 will be used to sensitise Barbadians on the importance of trees to the natural environment and encourage them to plant more.
Tree planting ceremonies abound, said Acting General Manager Keith Neblett, but due to inadequate preparation for planting and after-care, many saplings shrivels and die soon afterwards.
A campaign to educate Barbadians in the art of tree planting and care will lead up to National Arbor Day.
Thirteen non-governmental organisations, Government departments and plant nurseries are joining the NCC in the venture to plant 500 trees this year.
