DON'T DUMP those old telephone directories yet.
A plan is in the offing to divert the estimated 170 000 books from the Mangrove
Pond landfill.
Ordinarily the books would have been collected by a local recycling company.
However, that company closed last year.
If the old books, weighing more than half a million pounds, are sent to the
landfill they would require 12 542 square feet of space - roughly the equivalent
of 12 average size rooms.
However, the Sanitation Service Authority said that they are making arrangements
to collect all the directories from Government departments on August 23 and 24
and have them shredded by Diceabed Limited to make compost.
