THE DEMOCRATIC LABOUR PARTY (DLP) has described Government's decision to inject $3 million into the landfill at Greenland as "illogical, absurd and a case of misplaced priorities".
"Everyday the conditions at the
Queen Elizabeth Hospital and other health institutions are deteriorating
through lack of resources; surgical operations are being rescheduled and
the staff of health institutions are under more and more pressure.
Yet the Government can squander another $3 million on a project which the
MP for St. Andrew described as 'environmental madness' which respected
geologists and environmentalists have all warned is wrong," stated a
release from the political
party.
On Friday Minister of Health Senator Phillip Goddard announced that the $20 million landfill in St. Andrew needed additional work to make it ready to receive garbage. The DLP noted that last year's visit to the landfill revealed that the entire project was "badly designed, costly and was going to be an environmental nightmare" if it continued.
"The DLP stands completely opposed
to this project proceeding and to the wastage of millions of hard earned
tax payers money.
It is the party's view that we have to go back to the drawing board on
this issue and look at all of the possible alternatives to siting the
landfill at Greenland, including other waste disposal methods like
incineration," concluded the statement.
