DURABILITY and environmental friendliness are the key words behind Choice Environmental Solution's launch of Bin It Barbados, a disposal campaign involving the production of new garbage bins.
The cement bins, which cost about $1 000 each to make, will not only be placed in The City but producers are also looking at positioning some in the country.
Managing director Rodney Smith said the 23 inch wide by 43 inch high bins had a carrying capacity of 29 gallons of waste but had a specially-built, removable container inside.
"The container is lined with a biocide to prevent germs. The body is cast in concrete with reinforced steel and the top is galvanised steel," said Smith. He said it only took two days to reproduce the bins from the original models, adding that they were looking at producing about 300 for distribution.
"What we really want is for corporate Barbados, particularly those who produce a lot of waste, to support us and sponsor the cost of a bin. These concrete bins should be resilient and so far the support from companies like United Insurance, Dacosta Lifestyles and Durette has been overwhelming," Smith said.
Public relations officer and managing director of Strategy Consultants, Sandra Corbin, said Barbadians should feel proud to see such a project being made here.
"There is a great need for receptacles somewhere other than at bus stops and the only way to insure the maintenance and manufacture is the sponsorship," said Corbin.
She added that the Sanitation Service Authority had also lent its support to the project from the beginning.
Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of the Environment Senator Tyrone Barker said Barbadians would benefit tremendously from the initiative.
"We believe a pleasant country that is aesthetically pleasing would lead to a feel-good attitude, and we want these bins not only in town but where people congregate a lot," he said.
